Hi, I’m Stephanie. Welcome to HAVE Therapy!

Before anything else, I’m glad you are searching and found yourself on this page. Whether I am the one to join you on your journey for a time or not, your bravery has led you to begin already. If you do decide to invite me on your way, my name is Stephanie Birmingham, and I am a Licensed Graduate Marriage and Family Therapist.

Why I Do What I Do.

I began working in the mental health field in support positions, such as a psychiatric technician or as a medical assistant, in 2017. My experience in inpatient psychiatric units and outpatient clinics inspired me to pursue my master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy, as I saw the importance of early intervention and prevention that assists families and individuals in actualizing both their relationships and their lives. I’ve witnessed change through connection, the release of shame, and the comfort in accepting one’s self. I’ve been inspired by individuals and families that have course corrected and broken cycles of pain despite the limiting beliefs and expectations of those around them. Change is possible. Working with individuals has confirmed this for me, and it is an honor to walk alongside people in the most pivotal moments.

What My Goal Is.

At any point in history, we can echo the famous words that transported us into the world of Charles Dickens’ famous novel: ”It was the best of times. It was the worst of times.” Depending on who we are in society, the history of our families, and the choices that we make, we may meet at your best time or your worst time. Either way, the context that makes sense of your situation and behavior didn’t start with you. My goal in therapy is to encourage you to make sense of your story and empower you to write your next chapter. I aim to cultivate authentic relationships with clients, families, and those in romantic relationships in order to free us from the threat of shame and the delusion of perfection that holds us back and weighs us down. Whether outside of you is the best of times or the worst of times, I hope to walk with you towards the precipice of your best self, watch you launch, and embody the truth that “that last of the human freedoms [is] to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s way” (Viktor Frankl, Man’s Search for Meaning).

Who I Am Outside the Office

While productivity is an important part of achieving anyone’s goals, I have come to understand again the beauty and essential nature of creativity. I enjoy creating music, paintings, writings, and have recently picked up crocheting. I enjoy cultivating gardens and tasting the fruits of my labor, connecting with my higher power that meets me in the quiet places of life. Beauty is to be enjoyed, and it is also meant to be created by each one of us.
